Signs My Fuel System Is Clogged

We can help if your fuel system gets clogged. The most common reason why this happens is poor vehicle maintenance. The fuel filter should be changed every 30,000 miles and the system should be inspected. This allows us to remove any sediment that has built up in the fuel lines and to make sure the rest of the system is healthy. Here are signs that your fuel system is clogged in your automobile.

Hard/No Starts

You don’t need us to tell you that it is going to be difficult to start your car, truck, or utility vehicle if the fuel system is clogged. The reason why is obvious: You don’t have enough fuel in the engine. The fuel is being hung up somewhere in the system. This could be behind a clogged fuel filter or behind a clog in one of the fuel lines. The fuel injectors can also get clogged.

Misfiring/Stalling

If you do get your engine started, it may misfire and install frequently because, again, it doesn’t have enough fuel. Unfortunately, until we clean the fuel system to remove the clogs, the engine is going to misfire. If it misfires severely, it is going to stall. This makes it unpredictable when you are driving your automobile and adds to any stress you may feel behind the wheel.

Rough Idling

The misfiring will also give your engine an idle that is rough. Unfortunately, you will feel the engine idling roughly when you are seated at a stop. In severe cases, the engine may stall because it simply does not have enough fuel to maintain the idling.

Fuel Tank Noises

As you can imagine, if the fuel system is clogged, the fuel pump will have a difficult time pushing the fuel into the engine. In fact, it may start to whine or groan. You will hear this noise coming from the fuel tank where the fuel pump is located. This is a sign that the fuel pump is struggling. If you fail to take immediate action, you will end up with…

Fuel Pump Failure

The fuel pump will burn out its own motor trying to push the fuel into the engine. Unfortunately, this will increase your auto repair bill because we will need to replace the fuel pump as well as unplug the fuel system. It’s better to have the fuel system checked every 30,000 miles to avoid any of the problems that we have discussed in this blog post.
