In order to prevent your brake system’s rotors from going bad, have them resurfaced every 60,000 miles. The rotor surfaces will smooth out over time because they rub against the brake pads to generate friction. Your automobile needs this friction in order to slow down and stop. If you have any of the following problems, the rotor surfaces are too smooth and need to be recut.
Vibrating Steering Wheel
When you press down on the brake pedal, does your steering wheel vibrate? If it does, this is an indication that you have worked rotors in the brake system. Unfortunately, the rotors cannot do a good job of slowing down and stopping your vehicle if the surfaces are warped. As such, it is important to have the rotors recut in order to restore their shape. If the rotors are damaged, they will need to be replaced. Usually, the rotors should be serviced every 60,000 miles.
Pulsating Brake Pedal
In addition to the vibrating steering wheel, you may also notice that your brake pedal is pulsating under your foot as your vehicle slows down and stops. This, too, is a sign that the rotor surfaces are not in good shape. Again, the rotors help generate the friction that your vehicle needs to slow down and stop. As such, any issues with the rotors should be addressed as soon as possible. You do not want to get stuck in a situation where you cannot stop your car, truck, or utility vehicle.
Squealing Noises
Another sign that there is a problem with the rotor surfaces is squealing brakes. If your brakes squeal all the time, the rotor surfaces may be smooth. In addition, the brake pads may need to be replaced. This could be the case if it has been over 30,000 miles since you have had your brakes serviced. Ideally, it’s an excellent idea to have the brakes inspected every 12,000 miles. This ensures the brake system is working properly and you can count on it while you are driving.
Bluish Rotors
Finally, the friction that the rotors generate with the brake pads creates a tremendous amount of heat. Consequently, the heat turns the rotors blue over an extended period of time. Blue rotors are a sign that the rotor surfaces need to be recut. Again, if the rotors are damaged, they will need to be replaced. Do not worry. We can do that at our auto service shop.
